Social Learning and Blogging | March 14, 2009

After reading the article, “Social Media for Adult Online Learners and Educators”, I became more aware of the importance of blogging. I didn’t realize that something so social as “Facebook” could send information between classmates. Adults have more responsibilities and need technology that is fast and efficient. By communicating about ideas on the blog they can learn more.

  1. It is amazing where facebook is taking adults. Not only does it allow them to be in touch with friends and family and be able to share information but non technical people are open to learning new technology. Its great that you can use facebook and see real time status of what everyone is doing. Also, the fact that you can facebook via your cellphone is a plus.

  2. My feelings on Facebook are still out. I like that friends we are too busy to keep track of are able to ‘say hi’ and stay on the radar screen – but it seems like it actually might undercut you really ‘staying in touch.’

However, it is a great place to share things – put like the web in previous years, the more people use it, the less useful it is, since they suck up the space with the inane, rather than the important.

But I might just be in a bad mood tonight!

    • I just was “faced” by the wife of my very first friend who I grew up with from age 0 to 8 in Milwaukee, WI. I never knew what happened to him and didn’t know how to get in touch until he found me on his wife’s facebook.

Sure, a close relationship is not necessarily the main purpose of facebook, but establishing contact is.
P.S. I still haven’t learned how to download photos on it…

  3. Facebook has some privacy issues. They keep modifying the interface and with every modification, i feel that more information becomes available to everyone added on my list of contacts. you so much as lift a finger and 20 people are ready to comment on it!

In spite of all that, I use Facebook a lot, mainly to keep in touch with all my friends and family, and not so much for professional relationships. I prefer LinkedIn to Facebook for professional contacts because I can have more control on who accesses my information, and share less of my personal life.

    • I think you have a point there–privacy. I don’t really know everyone on my Facebook well. I must admit I like seeing the numbers add up as to how many people I am in contact with. I try to personally edit what I say and think others do, too. That’s why they post the most inane things like, “I can’t find my phone” or don’t post general but rather wall-to-wall messages.
